Live Moina Culture – 80 ml Starter Culture

Give your fish a natural boost with our live Moina culture, an excellent live food for medaka, and other small freshwater fish.

Moina are small freshwater crustaceans that are highly nutritious and readily accepted by fish. They are particularly useful for conditioning adult fish and encouraging strong growth in young fish.

Our cultures contain live, actively reproducing Moina, allowing you to establish your own culture at home and produce a regular supply of live food.

Ideal for:

  • Medaka
  • Small tropical fish
  • Conditioning breeding fish
  • Encouraging natural feeding behaviour

What you receive:
One live Moina starter culture, carefully prepared for transport.

Live cultures are sent with care and should be introduced to your prepared culture container as soon as possible after arrival. Culture performance will depend on temperature, feeding and water quality.

Setting up your culture:

Choose a suitable container

Use a clean, food-safe container, aquarium or bucket. A container holding at least 10–20 litres is recommended for a stable starter culture.

Add suitable water

Fill the container with dechlorinated water. Avoid freshly treated tap water, as chlorine and chloramine can harm Moina. Leave the container uncovered or loosely covered to allow gas exchange.

Add the starter culture

Gently pour the entire starter culture into the prepared container as soon as possible after arrival. Avoid sudden changes in temperature by allowing the sealed culture to acclimatise for around 15–30 minutes first.

Provide gentle aeration

Use gentle bubbling from an air pump to keep the water oxygenated. Avoid strong currents, as Moina are easily pushed around by vigorous aeration.

Feed regularly but sparingly

Moina can be fed small amounts of green water, spirulina powder, yeast or another suitable liquid live-food feed. Add only enough food to lightly cloud the water; it should clear within 24 hours. Overfeeding can quickly reduce water quality and cause the culture to crash.

Maintain suitable conditions

Keep the culture in a stable location away from direct sunlight and extreme temperature changes. Moina generally reproduce well in warm freshwater, provided the water remains well oxygenated and clean.

Harvest regularly

Once the population has increased, harvest a small amount using a fine net or sieve. Rinse the Moina with clean, dechlorinated water before feeding them to your fish. Avoid removing too many at once, and always leave a healthy population behind to continue reproducing.

Refresh the culture when needed

Remove settled waste and replace a small amount of water regularly. If the culture becomes foul-smelling, heavily cloudy or the Moina begin dying, carry out a partial water change and reduce feeding.
