How to Hatch Medaka Ricefish Eggs (Step-by-Step Guide)
If you’ve recently bought or collected Medaka ricefish eggs, hatching them is easier than you might think. With the right setup and a bit of patience, you can successfully raise healthy fry at home.
This guide will walk you through the entire process step by step.
What You’ll Need
Before you start, make sure you have the following:
A small container or tank (1–5 litres is ideal)
Clean, dechlorinated water
An air stone (optional but helpful)
A pipette
Meth blue (optional, to prevent fungus)
A stable temperature environment (24–26°C)
Step 1: Prepare the Hatching Container
Fill your container with clean, chlorinated water.
Keep the water shallow (around 5–10 cm deep) — this helps oxygen levels stay high.
Place the container somewhere with:
Stable temperature
Indirect light (avoid direct sunlight)
Step 2: Add the Eggs
Carefully transfer your eggs into the container using tweezers or a pipette.
Make sure:
Eggs are separated (not clumped together)
They are not sitting in debris
Healthy eggs are:
Clear or slightly golden
You may see tiny eyes developing over time
Step 3: Prevent Fungus (Important)
Fungus is the biggest risk when hatching eggs.
To prevent this:
Add a drop of methylene blue (optional)
Remove any white or fuzzy eggs immediately
👉 White eggs are infertile or infected and can spread fungus to healthy ones.
Step 4: Maintain Water Conditions
Keep conditions stable:
Temperature: 24–26°C (ideal around 25°C)
No strong water flow
Gentle aeration if possible
Do small water changes (10–20%) every few days using dechlorinated water.
Step 5: Watch for Development
Over the next few days, you’ll notice changes:
Eyes become visible
Embryo movement inside the egg
Hatching usually occurs within:
7–14 days, depending on temperature.
